What makes a rug hand-knotted?

A hand-knotted rug is made on a loom by tying each individual knot by hand. It is a slow, skilled process that produces a dense, durable rug with a unique character. The pattern is usually visible on the back of the rug, which is one way to recognise hand-knotted work.
